This little book was used to advertise "Hanford's Balsam of Myrrh: an external remedy for the human system and domestic animals". This liniment was used for the treatment of open wounds and also injuries such as kicks, bruises, strains, lameness, etc. Each letter of the alphabet represents an injury or condition that can be treated using this remedy. Includes illustrations and advertising jingles.
These pages illustrate the letters Q (questions when requesting the salve), R (rhyme for remembering the lesson to use the salve), S (strain or sprain) and T (throat that's sore).
Contextual NotesThe G.C. Hanford Manufacturing Company was established in 1846 by George C. Hanford and sold diverse products that ranged from flavoring extracts and baking powder to Celery Cure and Balsam of Myrrh. The recipe for Balsam of Myrrh was given to Hanford's parents by a doctor who often stayed at their farm.
G.C. Hanford Manufacturing Company was renamed Hanford Pharmaceutical and is now a major antibiotics producer for several international pharmaceutical corporations.
