Illustrated throughout with drawings, this inventive approach to an alphabet book combines letters, words, handwritten script, pictures and complete sentences to give readers a context for what they are learning. The preface also recommends that this book may be used by foreign born adults learning English as a second language.
Second edition. The first edition was printed in 1939 under the title "A children's picture dictionary."
The back cover depicts a young boy reading with the headline "A dictionary can be fun!" There are also eight reasons given for why a child should own this dictionary. It "develops the dictionary 'habit' and the right attitude toward reference books."
Contextual NotesStuart A. Courtis was an education reformer who attempted to apply scientific testing methods to education to determine how effective teaching in the classroom was. He is well known for his "Courtis Tests" which were some of the earliest standardized tests used by schools.
