According to the foreword, "This book is a plain-spoken treatise or talk on the ways in vogue in good society" and is intended to be a "daily companion and friendly adviser, whispering just what to do, and how and when to do whatever is to be done, at the fireside, on the journey, and among the neighbors." Although intended for women, "A busy man may find something in it for him, too, if he take the trouble to look."
While the book covers topics that range from "the accepted etiquette of courtship and marriage" to "mourning customs, funerals, and the behavior appropriate in hours of sadness and in the shadow of affliction, " the author refuses to discuss "any form of hospitality which is even remotely allied to the custom of moderate drinking." Specific topics covered include: Good manners when traveling - Hotel etiquette for women; Concerning introduction and other social forms - Driving, its secrets; Concerning courtship - Misconstrues ordinary attentions; Good manners in the family - If the hired help are ill; Mourning customs and funeral etiquette - Gloves; Good manners in church and other public places - How to behave in a library; Good manners in business relations - The attitude of the young woman in business to the men around her; Manners and different periods of history - Woman or lady?; Tricks and gestures - Handshaking.
