| Notes | Illustrated with hand-colored wood engravings. All pages have blank versos. A nursery rhyme about a rich Daddy Longlegs with an "abundance of gold" who spends his days courting the ladies. After meeting what he thinks is his true love, Miss Butterfly, he vows "to be her's, 'pon his honor". Unfortunately the marriage is interrupted by a fat swallow as "cuel as Nero" who carries the spider off to his fate. The butterfly who is offended by Daddy Longlegs departing without saying good-bye, is determined to marry old Gaffer Grasshopper to banish her sorrow. In the end, the spider returns having survived his ordeal minus some appendages and taunts Miss Butterfly with: "Oh! Jenny, my honey, I'd give you all my money could I but have call'd you my wife; but, henceforth, we sever, for ever and ever, so she's your's, neighbor Gaffer, for life." Part of the Grandmamma Easy's Pictorial Books series. The upper illustration on the cover depicts an old woman reading to a group of playful children. The lower illustration depicts a group of young girls playing with a doll. Printed on the cover: Dean & Co., Threadneedle St. |
