CE DATE OF CONSTRUCTIONOldest building on this site was a Portuguese chapel built in 1612. Omani Arabs ousted Portuguese from East African coast in 1698. In Zanzibar, they partly demolished the chapel and a merchant's house to build this Fort 1700-1710. The fort was gradually expanded and reached its present size in the mid 1800s.
