TitleMerrill and Ring Logging company Shay locomotive, probably in Clallam County
PhotographerKinsey, Clark
Dateca. 1917
Earliest Date1915
Latest Date1922
NotesNote taken from a document of unknown origin accompanying some of Harry Hall's photographs: Merrill & Ring, Pysht. There were three configurations of geared steam locomotives used in the early days of railroad logging. These were the 'Climax' the 'Hysler' and most popular of all was the 'Shay, ' shown in this picture. These engines were equipped with three vertical steam cylinders with the boiler offset to the left to accommodate the drive. All wheels were driven and the front and rear trucks were pivoted to allow for very short radius curved tracks. Merrill & Ring had five of this type weighing approximately 70 tons each. This picture was about 1917. In the picture: 1 Bill Bush, Engineer, 2 Dave Graham, Hook Tender Fireman; two brakemen not known.

Handwritten and printed on image: Merril [sic] + Ring Logging Co.

Photographer name guessed by cataloger, as the text on the image appears to be in the same hand as the text on other Clark Kinsey photos.
