| Contextual Notes | Workmen's Circle was originally a socialist workers' organization that was founded by Eastern European Jewish immigrants on New York's Lower East Side in 1892. In 1900, it became a national fraternal order and by 1910 had 38,866 members. It eventually grew to 700 branches. The Seattle lodge was first located at 14th Avenue and Main Street then later relocated to 120 21st Avenue. It was known as the Arbeter Ring in Yiddish. Their political beliefs were a mix of liberalism and socialism. After World War II, with the emergence of a strong anti-Communist atmosphere in America, the organization made efforts to distance itself from communism with public denunciations of that system. The organization allegedly purged its membership of "communist infiltrators". |
