Historical NotesBouillotte is a card game that was invented in the salons of Luxembourg Palace. The drawing shows the stakes of Napoleon, Louis XVIII, and the Allied leaders in the days leading up to the Battle of Waterloo.

Napoleon's return to the game makes Louis XVIII think he has lost everything. Francis of Austria points to Italy, his main objective after Napoleon is ousted. Alexander of Russia, on the contrary, is anxious to reclaim Poland. Frederick of Prussia stakes everything he has (Prussia and Saxony). Wellington exudes confidence, having thrown Belgium into the pot. The author predicts that England will prevail, both on the battlefield and at the negotiating table.
