| Notes | Slide shows the eruption column that started being emitted from the summit of the dome while we were in the crater sampling. We were sampling vents on the flanks of the dome when we were called on the radio and told that there was an eruption going on. We were then asked what it looked like from the inside of the crater so we looked up and saw this cloud of ash heading up to twenty thousand feet above our heads. We did not know the eruption was going on since the vents nearby were making so much noise that we could not hear the eruption. There was nothing we could do. The helicopter pilot would not fly in to get us out. He said "enjoy because I'm not coming in there now, I don't know what is going to happen." And so we had three hours to spend walking around the crater waiting until the eruption was over. The eruption only lasted about an hour and a half of those three hours, but they still wouldn't come in and get us until things calmed down and gaseous emissions ceased. So we had to witness the eruption from the inside of the crater, down near the bottom of the dome, with no place to go! Not a fun time. |
