Husky crew and Indian canoe race, La Conner, November 29, 1941
Husky crew and Indian canoe race, La Conner, November 29, 1941
TitleHusky crew and Indian canoe race, La Conner, November 29, 1941
Studio NameSeattle Post-Intelligencer
Studio LocationUnited States--Washington (State)--Seattle
Date1941
NotesIn 1941, Swinomish leader Tandy Wilbur arranged a competition between two Indian racing canoes and two shells manned by the University of Washington Huskies. The four crews made a series of 100-yard sprints down Swinomish Slough, from the Swinomish Reservation to the town of La Conner. Both sides remember winning the race. Canoe and crew races had a loyal and longstanding following in their respective societies. However, this race was more of a media event than a true competition, and the association with the championship Husky team gave rare positive coverage to the Swinomish.P>P>Based on newspaper research and a close examination of other photographs taken at the same event, the 1942 date on the negative itself is incorrect. The newspaper filed the negative in February of that year, but the event took place in 1941.P>P>Caption information from Bruce G. Miller, "The Great Race of 1941: A Coast Salish Public Relations Coup. Pacific Northwest Quarterly 89, No. 3 (Summer 1998): 127-135.
