| Title | Anti-Chinese riot at Seattle 1886 |
| Photographer | Richard Nicol |
| Date | 1886 |
| Notes | In March 1886, a mob led by local representatives of the Knights of Labor, rampaged through the streets of Seattle, driving hundreds of local Chinese to the waterfront. Chinese laborers in the hopfields and in local factories, mills and camps, worked harder and longer for less money than white laborers, driving down wages. As violence escalated, the Home Guards were called out and martial law declared. This engraving was published in Harper's Weekly magazine, March 6, 1886. |
