| Notes | Portrait of Amelia Harris, mother of Huldah Harris Kaufman. David and Huldah Kaufman were among the earliest Jewish settlers in the Seattle area. Their daughter, Sara Kaufman Rucker, born February 27, 1869, was the first Jewish child born in Seattle.
Handwritten on verso: Amelia Harris.
Note from donor file: David Kaufman was born in Germany in 1833 and died in Seattle in 1912. His wife, Huldah Harris Kaufman was born in 1829, also in Germany, and passed away in Seattle in 1906. David Kaufman came around the Horn to Victoria, B.C. before 1853. When he was established there he sent to Germany for his boyhood sweetheart, Huldah Harris, and for her mother, Amelia Harris, going to New York, again around the Horn, to meet them. They were married and returned to Victoria. They settled in Seattle in 1868. Before that, he was one of the founders of the first synagogue in Victoria. (His name is inscribed with other founders, on a parchment scroll, the property of the Victoria (B.C.) congregation, and probably now in the National Archives, Victoria BC.) When the Kaufmans and their family came to Seattle - he was in the shoe business in Victoria BC - David Kaufman brought a Torah, which he presented to Temple de Hirsch upon its founding, and is still used. When Amelia Harris (Kaufman's mother-in-law) died she was buried in the Jewish Cemetery in Victoria. (There was no Jewish cem. here.)
