TitleWorkmen's Circle dinner for Jewish servicemen during World War II, Seattle, Washington, ca. 1943
PhotographerUnknown
Dateca. 1943
NotesNote from donor file: Workmens Circle, Jewish organization with activities during WWII, ca. 1943. Had a large building on the property where T.T. Minor Elementary School is now. Workmens' Circle sponsored many dinners and entertainments for military personnel at that time. Waiting on tables, the two girls at the left are (foreground) Rosalie Sidell Steinbrecher and her best friend, Frances Schwartz Bergman. (The next year, 1944 they graduated from Garfield High School. Steinbrecher was Valedictorian and Bergman was Salutatorian. It was the first time since Garfield was built in 1926 that 2 girls had these honors and both were Jewish!) Reva Ketzlach Twersky, 2nd aisle from the left, standing facing the front. Edward Sidell, standing in the right doorway (father of Rosalie Sidell Steinbrecher), who was a long time Secretary of Workmens' Circle. Ben Stein, in front of Sidell, face front behind a soldier. Mrs. Louis (Rose) Caplan, first aisle right, at the back of the room. Sol Esfeld, in the front row center (middle, head table). The woman at the head table 3rd from right is/was married to Ed Bensussen. Middle table (in front of Sol Esfeld), girl, next to soldier, left side of table was Bernice Abrams, Mrs. David (step-sister of Steinbrecher for awhile since David's mother was married to Steinbrecher's father for about 4 years.)

During wartime, the Jewish USO sponsored dances at the Temple de Hirsch Annex. Steinbrecher used to go there with her Aunt Gussie Sidell who was kind of her chaperone. Steinbrecher was there one night when Martha Raye, the comedienne-actress entertained.
