| Title | Lewis Ford VFW Post #289 Drill Team, Seattle, 1938 |
| Photographer | Unknown |
| Date | 1938 |
| Caption | Organized in 1938 by Irene Alexander and Gloria McFarlin Harvey, the drill team marched in major Seattle parades through 1940. Its members were African American female high school students. The drill leader was Mrs. Nellie McCullough, who marched with the drill team in the parades. It has been erroneously described as the Ebenezer Church drill team, probably because the practice area was the grounds of the Tennis Club which was next door to the Ebenezer Church. The building in the background is the original Tennis Club, which became the first East Madison YMCA. |
