General NotesThis is a plate taken from the work entitled "Von dem nutz der ding die in äckeren gebuwt werde".

"Von dem nutz..." is a 16th century German reprint of Pietro Crescenzi's treatise on agricultural life "Opus ruralium commodorum", or "The Advantages of Country-living". It illustrates "Magosan" (the opium poppy) and "Nachtschatte" (nightshade). The original manuscript is a popular 14th century work with around 130 copies still in existence. The book was first printed in 1471 with 52 more editions printed through the 16th century. The book itself is divided into 12 sections, each covering a different aspect of agriculture. Much of the sections V and VI include medicinal uses of plants. (Anderson, Frank. An Illustrated History of the Herbals. New York: Columbia University Press, 1977.)

This plate is possibly from "Von Ackerbaw, Erdtwucher und Bawleüte", published in 1531 by Hans Knoblouch jr.

This is leaf number 14 taken from the modern collection entitled: Herbals of five centuries; 50 original leaves from German, French, Dutch, English, Italian, and Swiss herbals; with an introduction and bibliography by Claus Nissen. Zurich: L'Art Ancien, Olten, Weiss-Hesse [etc.], 1958
