This print was taken from Garten der Gesuntheit (Hortis Sanitatus in Latin).

Garten der Gesuntheit was first published in 1485 by Peter Schoffer. The work is authored by Johannes de Cuba, also known as Johann Wonnecke. He was the town physician in Frankfurt/Main from 1484 until 1503. He served previously as a doctor in Mainz and Aschaffenburg. Garten Der Gesuntheit is valuable as the first herbal composed in a modern language and the 65 (of a total of 369) images composed from nature rather than inspired by a previous work. These images have been attributed to Erhard Rewich, a protege of Wolfegg Hausbuch, one of the leading artists of the time. The remainder of the images were likely obtained by Schoffer.

This is leaf number 4 from from the modern work entitled: Herbals of five centuries; 50 original leaves from German, French, Dutch, English, Italian, and Swiss herbals; with an introduction and bibliography by Claus Nissen. Zurich: L'Art Ancien, Olten, Weiss-Hesse [etc.], 1958.
