DescriptionThis is the second largest of three deep, pumpkin-shaped gourd drums made of large calabashes with indirectly braced skins. The top portion of the calabash is sliced off, with the skin being stretched over the top and braced with leather thongs to a ring at the bottom of the calabash. An additional leather loop is attached to the hoop for hanging or holding the drum. The gourd drums are included on the 1979 Archive list of Ghanaian instruments. In 1997 Atteh Nettey identified this drum as a bimba.
It is believed to come from the Northern Ghana/ Northern Nigeria part of West Africa; possibly the Dagomba or other Islam influenced areas and peoples of West Africa.
