| Description | This is the smallest of five African drums that were previously unidentfied. These drums were brought to the UW by Bakary Marong in 1973-1974. This is a kutitindingo ("little kutiro"), Mandinka drum from Gambia, and one of a set of three used for dance drumming. The skin of the head comes almost half-way down over the sides of the body and is attached to six short pegs protruding from the dark brown-colored body. It is further secured by lacing and several rows of string which are wrapped around the skin and the body near the top of the drum and below the pegs. Long strips of leather are attached to a few points around the head of the drum. The initials J, B and K are carved into the body of the drum, with the indentations being dyed black. The provenance of this drum is unknown. |
