| Notes | Images documenting the Eniwetok-Bikini Resurvey Project between July and September 1964.
Scientists were interested in the ground water on the low coral islands because of water's importance to plant growth. In this photograph, Richard Billings prepared plastic tubing for pumping water from the ground. He drove pipe into the soil, inserted the tubing into the pipe and pumped water into a jug. Tests showed that the water was brackish, but safe for plant growth. The tree in the background was Messerschmidia.9266-3.
