| Notes | Frontispiece and half-title page are illustrated with uncolored wood engravings. The rest of the book is unillustrated. By drawing on other's experiences as well as his own, the author attempts to "[point] out the means of mental improvement, [lay] down maxims of worldly prudence and moral wisdom, and [offer] counsel concerning manners and behavior, amusements, occupations, the conduct of domestic life, and the pursuit of business." Specific topics discussed include: Effect of learning on the manners; Advantages of female society; Principles necessary to be observed by those young men who are not yet in business for themselves (including Government of the Tongue, Ill-natured jests, and Choice of friends); Advice on entering upon business (including Proper persons to deal with, Artificial insensibility, Safest to deal with those on one's own level, and Choice of a wife); Advice with respect to manners and behavior (including Cleanliness of person, Dignity of manners, and Rules for conversation); Importance of religious knowledge; and, Dueling.
