This book is written as a series of letters of advice from a mother, Portia, to her daughter, Sophie. Sophie is first away at boarding school and then later living with female relatives in London. Although the letters were originally intended to be private, the author decided to publish them for the "governesses of ladies' boarding schools in Great Britain and Ireland" as well as for mothers who do not have the time to fully instruct their daughters, but who would like to see them acquire "those accomplishments which are most suitable to her daughter's rank and station, and [correct] those foibles to which she is naturally most inclined." The book covers various topics of female education such as: dancing, learning French, sewing, conversation, fashion, modesty and coquetry, good breeding, and how to behave toward servants.
Printed on the title page: 'Tis education forms the tender mind, Just as the twig is bent, the tree's inclined. - Pope.
Printed on the title page: Second Edition, Corrected.
