Popular nursery rhyme that was part of the series "Harris's Cabinet." All of the insects gather for a ball and a feast while a group of children watch them. The story is written in verse. This plate depicts the various insects making their way to the feast including the snail. "With steps so majestic the snail did advance, and promised the gazers a minuet to dance." |
| Contextual Notes | John Harris was the successor of E. Newbery. In 1807, he began publishing the very popular Harris's Cabinet series of which the most popular titles were The Butterfly's Ball, The Peacock at Home, The Elephant's Ball, and The Lion's Masquerade. In 1883, Harris' successors, Griffith and Farran, reprinted these four titles using facsimile reproductions of the text and illustrations from the Flaxman collection. The Butterfly's Ball was written by William Roscoe for his children and was set to music by order of King George III and Queen Charlotte for their daughter Princess Mary. The references to "little Robert" in the story are probably Roscoe's son. William Mulready was an Irish genre painter living in London who is best known for his romanticizing depictions of rural scenes (Source: Wikipedia). |
