This publication contains short one page illustrated stories about the daily lives and strange behavior of animals and birds, some with moral overtones, some related to historical events, and some merely casual observations of the animal in nature.

| Contextual Notes | Chatterbox was a British magazine for children that was established in 1866 by Reverend J. Erskine Clark to provide healthy reading for children and to compete with Penny Dreadfuls. In its early years, Chatterbox contained a mixture of serial stories, factual articles, and a moderate degree of religious instruction. In later years, more adventurous material was included. Chatterbox survived until 1948 (Oxford Companion to Children's Literature, 1984).
Harrison Weir was a natural history artist and a great lover of animals. He organized the first cat show in England in the Crystal Palace, London, in 1871. |
