NOTESThe walls were built and rebuilt by the Portuguese, French and Berbers. Trade from Essaouira goes back to the 7th century BCE, when Phoenician sailors discovered the area; Essaouira's peak was under the Portuguese, from the end of the 15th century until 1541, who made it a bridgehead named Mogador.
