| Contextual Notes | Henry W. Knight was born 1876 in California, the son of Hiram Knight. By 1920, he had joined Richard Knight on the Toklat River in Kantishna District, Alaska. Henry's occupation was listed as miner in 1920. Richard, apparently an uncle, was listed as a roadhouse keeper. In 1930, Henry Knight is listed as the ownder of Knight' Roadhouse, rather than Richard, who had apparently died. There is no mention of a wife for either Henry or Richard in the 1920 or 1930 census. Ed Brooker describes a journey in which he spent a night at Knight's Roadhouse: "One stop for the night was at Knight's Roadhouse on the Toklat River. A Mr. and Mrs. Knight with one son had lived here for a number of years. In summer they saw no one because the terrain both east and west of them was swamp, and mosquitoes, almost impassable. They were self sufficient with their garden, their game and perhaps some fish, though the Toklat River is muddy.
"Their place stands out because it was the only stop we made where the cabin was warm when we arrived and we did not have to cook our own grub. In passing, I have heard that the Knight family stayed on for a number of years till both Mr. and Mrs. Knight passed away and were buried by their son. I have lost the story of the son." On March 18, 1913, Ubique Stuck wrote in his diary, "Tonight we are at Knights' roadhouse on the Toklat(?), and although we are cooking our own food, are treated with the greatest Kindness. Mrs Knight baked our biscuits for us and came over after supper. While the boys read the Gospel and Epistle for the day and we had prayers."
