Timberline Lodge under construction on Mount Hood, Oregon, 1937
Timberline Lodge under construction on Mount Hood, Oregon, 1937
TitleTimberline Lodge under construction on Mount Hood, Oregon, 1937
PhotographerUnknown
Date1937
NotesCaption on verso: Timberline Lodge rapidly nearing completion on the slopes of Mt. Hood, 60 miles distant from Portland, Oregon will be one of the important factors in making this winter playground area second to none in the country. Built at a cost of $400, 000 the lodge will be ready for guests early in the summer of 1937 and will be the hub from which many recreational trips may radiate--mountain climbing, horseback riding, fishing jaunts to nearby lakes. Mount Hood, 11, 225 feet high, towers directly above the rustic structure (the lodge is at an elevation of 6, 000 feet) and the Cascade range presents a most imposing view of Mount Jefferson, the Three Sisters and other rugged peaks to the south. The lodge is reached over an excellent highway from Portland to Government Camp and a recently improved forest road that winds its way up the mountain through avenues of great evergreen trees. The second annual summer Ski tournament will be held on Mount Hood - June 13, 1937.
Contextual NotesThe 12,350 square-foot Timberline Lodge took 15 months to complete, beginning in June 1936.
