Building StyleRenaissance Revival
Building NotesRenamed in 1910 after pioneer Arthur Denny, Denny Hall was the first building constructed on the present University of Washington campus. The building, designed in the French Renaissance style with round turrets and candle-snuffer roofs, was built of Tenino sandstone and pressed brick. Built 1893-94, Denny Hall was designed by architect Charles W. Saunders, and constructed by Harry C. Ashenfelter Company of Spokane. As the original Administration Building, the rear portion contained an assembly hall, classrooms and offices (the interior was rebuilt in 1956 by Grainger, Thomas & Boar). Crowning the building is the belfry containing "Varsity Bell" which was brought around the Horn of South America in the winter of 1861-62 for installation in the original Territorial University building.
